2021 National Summer Coding Camp

The California School for the Blind and APH are proud to announce our free 2021 National Coding Camp taking place this summer, weekdays June 22-30!! If you are a middle school, high school, or transition-age student with vision loss and have an interest in foundational coding concepts and getting started with coding in HTML, sign up today!

Students will learn basics and principals of coding in HTML and CSS as we build our own text-based game such as an escape room or a choose your own adventure story! Full group and small group lessons will be held every day from 1 – 3 p.m. Eastern (10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Pacific), with opportunities to meet 1:1 for extra support on your project, a chance to ask questions, to troubleshoot, or to dig deeper into the world of coding!

We will be using Windows computers with JAWS software to access the curriculum and creating our website using Google Drive, Notepad, and a whole lot of creativity. Students are expected to be proficient in using JAWS; navigating, accessing, uploading, and creating documents in Google Drive; switching between three open programs on a computer; and saving documents. Students do NOT need a background in coding!

Requirements:

  • Middle school, high school student, or transition-age student with vision loss
  • Completed registration and permission forms
  • A Windows computer running JAWS screen reader software
  • Proficiency using the JAWS screen reader
  • Ability to access and navigate Google Drive independently or with limited support
  • A can-do attitude!

This opportunity is at no cost to the student or district, but there are a limited number of spots available. Preference is given on a first-come basis and on the attendance of the 2021 National Coding Symposium. So don’t wait; sign up today!
