Visual impairments in children –what are the important things to know?
May 20, 2021 @ 4:00 am - 5:00 pm EDT
Visual impairments in children often impact several aspects of development including learning, access to educational materials, and/or socialization. Thus, as children enter school, it is important to identify those at an increased risk for visual impairments, whether they be due to ocular or cerebral causes. Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) refers to vision impairments caused by malfunction of the central visual pathways rather than the eyes, although specific definitions vary between different groups and countries. This talk will focus on a large body of work from our research group encompassing both ocular conditions, like amblyopia, and CVI. More specifically, the talk will include a brief overview of identifying how many children are affected by visual impairments and associated risk factors, followed by a summary of studies focusing on screening for amblyopia and CVI in preschool and school-aged children. Finally, I will discuss the development of a core outcomes set for interventions in the context of our recent studies using app-based therapies in children with eye movement disorders and CVI.
