TMAP: Building Environmental Literacy at a Distance

Description: Join members of the LightHouse in San Francisco, CA and Washington State School for the Blind for a live webinar, supported by PowerPoint presentation, that extols the virtues of Tactile Maps Automated Production (TMAP) – a project promoting independent travel and tactile map literacy for people who are blind, that has applications for O&M instruction in a time of distance learning.

Primary Core or ECC Area: Orientation and Mobility, but we will also touch on Compensatory Skills (Compensatory Skills include skills necessary for accessing the core curriculum including concept development; communication modes; organization and study skills; access to print materials; and the use of braille/Nemeth, tactile graphics, object and/or tactile symbols, …)

Lesson Plan Goal: Participants will gain an understanding of how to use the TMAP app to generate braille and tactile street maps of any address, and supplement Orientation and Mobility instruction using TMAP effectively.
Learning Objectives: The participant with examine the history and development of TMAP software; The participant will review the 6 steps to create a TMAP street map; The participant will list 3 uses of TMAP in O&M instruction; The participant will identify at least 3 strategies to teach map-reading readiness skills.
