The Importance of Safe Mobility to Achieving Developmental Milestones for Children Who are Congenitally Blind or Severely Visually Impaired

Details: This interactive presentation will present a literature review demonstrating the link between unavoidable collisions and developmental delay in learners born blind and visually impaired. In addition, results of a study of 34 learners aged 14 to 69 months Independent walking before and after wearing belt canes will be presented.
By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Identify mobility visual impairment in children born severely visually impaired and blind.
- Describe the negative impacts on achieving developmental milestones growing up with unsafe mobility.
- Describe the positive outcomes of wearing belt canes most of the day, every day for children who cannot see to avoid collisions.
